“It’s All Right With Me”

A Review

It was by coincidence that I first learned of Elizabeth “Liz” Terrell. First, there was Chris Brydge, an area bassist whose proficiency on the Upright caught my ear. That led to a conversation,

which eventually led to an invitation to my home. During the visit he just happened to mention that his lady friend was also a musician--a singer.

“We do a duet and she also has a quartet. She’s on YouTube. Check her out,” he said then.

So, I did. And once I heard her voice, I just couldn’t seem to get enough. After exhausting everything I could find online, I started my own personal vigil—waiting for the release of the CD that I was told she was working on.

Well, after much anticipation, that which I had been eagerly awaiting, has finally materialized with the release of Liz Terrell’s new CD, “It’s All Right With Me”. And it, I must say, has been well worth the wait.

Co-produced by Hampton Roads own Jae Sinnett, the CD is everything a jazz-lover like myself could have hoped for—and more. Particularly those, who, like myself love female jazz vocalists like Nancy Wilson, Dianne Reeves, and Diana Krall to name just a few.

Much like those ladies, Liz Terrell has a way of capturing a tune and making it hers. And she does it by way of a voice that can best be described as operatic, controlled, rich and full bodied. A talent that sweeps you up and carries you away. The lady knows how to “work” a song.

Bassist Chris Brydge, (who Liz credits with being her partner in both music and life), along with drummer Emre Kartari, pianist Daniel Clarke, guitarist Alan Parker and Eddie Williams on sax provide plenty of support, keeping things moving with their own individual flourishes distributed throughout.

But there is no doubt who the star of the show is here. It is her CD after all.

Opening with a contemporary arrangement of “People Make The World Go Round’ (C. Brydge),

The CD is a pleasing and interesting mix of familiar Jazz standards with at a least one surprise selection, a rendition of “The Saga of Harrison Crabfeathers” (S. Kuhn)- thrown in for good measure. And what a pleasant surprise it is!

Other standout cuts include a Chris Brydge arrangement of “Time After Time” (C. Lauper), a Daniel Clarke arrangement of “It’s All Right With Me” (C. Porter), and a beautiful, haunting version of “Almost Blue”. (E. Costello)

The CD finishes with a beautifully sculpted and executed arrangement of “What The World Needs Now” (B. Bacharach & H. David) A fitting ending for a CD that leaves the listener wanting more.

More specifically, what the world needs now. What I want to hear.

Is more from Elizabeth “Liz” Terrell!

This will be the largest venue I've ever played, and I am equal parts ecstatic and terrified, but I will have Chris Brydge on bass, Alan Parker on guitar, and Emre Kartari on drums to round out the quartet, so I will be in excellent company! If it sounds good- I'll write it. If it feels good- I'll sing it. I am an artist, always have been and always will be. Everything I will ever create is all ready woven into me, now I just have to find the courage to release it. That is the journey we all must take.

"Find your sound!" "Perfect your signature!!" "Make your mark!!!"

Too often do I find myself searching for these things in everything around me. Metaphorically turning over stones as I'm turning over records. Magnifying the greats beyond their all ready lofty pedestals, certain that they hid secrets in between their melodies. Wasting my creative energy tirelessly drawing up a treasure map that will inevitably lead back to ME.

X marks the spot.

The journey isn't about searching the world, it's about searching yourself. Pushing past obstacles of insecurities and comparison, standing firm on a foundation of vulnerability, and letting yourself be exactly who you are.

You are enough. I am enough.

No pretenses. Accept your flaws, celebrate your strengths, choose to see beauty in it all.

Then- the art will come.

Let it come,

SMITH!

CHECK HIM OUT: www.michaelmsmith.com

When I initially made the decision to jump into the music scene some years ago, singing as a background vocalist for Mike was one of my first ventures. He is a stellar musician in every way, and I have learned (and continue to learn) so much from him. I am honored and beyond excited to be sharing the stage with him again.

I've toured Europe with Mike once before in December of 2013, and this time around is feeling like a full circle moment for me. The improvement I've noticed in my voice and my range while singing Mike's original music and arrangements again is astounding. Seeing my hard work pay-off in a tangible way is so encouraging.

The setlist spans a vast variety of genres from modern gospel, traditional hymns, Christmas carols, jazz, and pop, and our ensemble will feature Michael M. Smith (lead vocals and piano), Jessica Payne (alto and bass), J.J. Lassiter (tenor and cajon), and this year I'll be singing soprano, and grooving along with the band on hand percussion (tambourine, claves, and shakers)!

I promise to post regular updates, and I look forward to seeing all of your pictures and posts from holiday celebrations as well, but I am looking forward to spending this season in a new place. A change of scenery can often offer a refreshing new perspective, and I'm hoping to learn something new about myself, my music, and my faith. We'll see what this adventure has in store.

I will certainly miss the traditions of the season, and family and friends, but I offer you all my Christmas album "A Christmas In Black and White" to help spread some holiday cheer while I'm off and away doing the same in Italy.

See you all in 2018

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

~EJT
Liz Terrelltag:lizterrell.com,2005:Post/47637722017-07-24T16:31:59-04:002022-05-18T00:09:57-04:00Introducing: CONVERSATIONS EP
I am proud to announce that my first EP "Conversations" is nearly complete.

I am incredibly proud of this particular work and I'm excited to share it with you all. This has been a long time coming.

I've said for years that I'm "working on an album", and I suppose that was technically true. I was always writing and brainstorming, but the days, months, and years kept rolling by. However, I am confident that this timing is correct. I have been through years of discovery and trial and error, and this modest work I believe is an honest snapshot of who I am in this moment with an additional glimpse of where I'm going.

The project consists of 5 songs. 3 originals, and 2 well-known jazz standards. The range of styles is vast and my hope was to throw open the curtains and shine light on all the different genres of music that I'm diving into.

The name "Conversations" is meant to reflect that this consolidation of songs is the direct result of the ongoing dialogue I have with music: the back and forth, up and down, rollercoaster of creation. It is also a nod to my songwriting and improvisation process. I have always viewed creating music as a conversation between melody and harmony, instrument and musician, lyric and listener, etc, etc.

This way of thinking has proven particularly true with jazz. In the right setting we vibe and play off one another just like any other conversation only our language is music. Each musician conversing with their own instrument and bringing their skills and interpretation to the song to create a dialogue from musician to musician.

The standard I've chosen are ones that I am very well acquainted with as a vocalist. I wanted their arrangements to give room for my stage personality to shine through and reflect the blend between my proclivity for jazz and my voices natural quality and inclination toward soul. These songs (I hope) also highlight how much my scatting and melodic improvisation have grown.

The 2 originals I wrote on my own are songs that I have NEVER performed live nor even shared with anyone. They are definitely not straight ahead jazz, but rather, are a combination of several of my musical influences. Honestly, I'm not sure what genre to categorize them in, but I am taking suggestions! Let me know what you think once you take a listen.

The song that my husband wrote dates all the way back to the beginning of our relationship. I had several different options for a 5th song, but they all required a bit more time to really shape up (you'll most likely see all of them on my next project). My husband, who also produced and recorded the album, suggested that I stretch my ear and write lyrics and melody over the top of his instrumental piece, and I think it worked out beautifully.

The music will be completely finished by next month, and features a variety of musicians. I have a spectacular jazz trio on the standards, and some of the best studio musicians in the 757 on the originals. I am working with a very dear friend and wonderful artist for the artwork, and the official release date is scheduled for OCTOBER 15th, 2017

I'll be having a release concert that will feature the 5 songs on the EP plus a variety of others. My hope is to take the audience on a journey through all the different "conversations" with music that lead me to this point and time, and so without further ado here is the song list!

CONVERSATIONS EP

La Robe Rouge

Dreaming is human nature. Our ability to create and achieve and grow is an integral part of our genetic makeup. It is what sets us apart from the rest of creation. Ambition is ingrained into us. No matter the deck of cards this life has dealt us we can not help but hope that our present reality is not all that there is for us in this life.

We just KNOW deep down that there is something better, bigger, and exciting in this world.
We feel that WE can be extraordinary, that we can do something astonishing.
We hope to live our destiny. We hope to find our purpose. We hope that we have one.

We are all capable of incredible things.
We all have dreams.
And we all deserve the chance to pursue them.

But who among us actually deserves to achieve them?

Is it the person who works the hardest or the one who is the most talented?
Is it the person who gets there first or the one who is the best?
Is it the person with the most experience or the one with the most potential?

I'm not sure it has to be one or the other.
There is something to be said for being prepared, practiced, and experienced. However that will only take you so far.
Doesn't there have to be some element of natural talent and inclination?

In a perfect world would we live according to our inborn proclivities
OR
would we be allowed to choose that which we would like to excel at by hard work and determination?

I have so many questions, and not nearly enough answers. I have learned a lot since making my dreams my career, but the more I learn the more I see and realize everything that I don't yet know or comprehend. However, I do know this- no one achieves anything alone.

I need my community.
So, my fellow creatives, I would love to hear from you in particular!

What does it mean to pursue a dream?
Why have you stuck with it?
What has been your most shocking success AND failure?
What comes easily to you?
What have you had to strive for?
Have you ever felt that you "arrived"?
How long did that feeling last?

Let's share our insights, thoughts, frustrations, victories, failures, disappointments, anything, and everything.
There is room for everyone's dream to come true.

Let's chat,

~EJT

They are only open for brunch ONCE a year, and that is during this festival, so this is your one and only chance in 2017 to try a unique and custom-made brunch menu at this exceptional Virginia favorite!

I am also pleased to announce the extraordinary talent I will have with me!
This years quartet will feature Roy George (piano), JR Erb (bass), and Rich Mossman (drums).

Roy and I have been playing together since 2014. He is an original member of "Licita" (the name of my jazz band before Modern Muse), which debuted with a live recording of Black Coffee at Soul Haven Studios. Since that time he and I have played together as a duo all over Hampton Roads. He is my "musical mind reader" and our comfort together on stage is palpable. He is also my writing partner, and I am very excited to debut some original songs we have worked on together!

JR and I met in early 2016 but have played together this year quite a bit! My performance at the 2016 WBJF resulted in a regular gig at Waypoint Grill in Williamsburg VA. I have been back there once a month with a trio for a special jazz brunch, and JR has been my bass player there since day one. He is one of those musicians that immediately makes you feel at ease. His solos are thoughtful and interesting, and his bass lines are steady. JR will actually be relocating later in 2017, so I am very grateful to have this opportunity to play with him.

You may recognize Rich as the drummer for Jacob Vanko (a powerhouse musician in the area- seriously, LOOK HIM UP), but I have had the pleasure of playing with Rich a handful of times this past year. It is a delight every gig I have with him, and his musicality brings out the best in me and every musician he plays with. I LOVE to experiment and shake up the typical style of the good old fashion standards, and Rich can jump puddles with me from funk to swing to doo-wop effortlessly. His passion and energy are contagious, and he'll have you moving in your seat from the first shuffle to the last hit.

FRIENDS- Get your tickets today. Seriously. Every single jazz brunch SOLD OUT last year, and this year is well on its way to doing so as well! You can buy tickets for each individual event or they have EXCELLENT deals that cover the entire weekend of musical offerings!!! Buy your tickets and get more details at the Winter Blues Jazz Festival website.

I am looking forward to seeing you!

~EJT

Liz Terrelltag:lizterrell.com,2005:Post/43787042016-11-27T12:40:38-05:002022-04-25T10:30:30-04:00Name Me

I was singing on the last day for a jazz brunch at one of the participating restaurants. There were about 50 seats available. I was extremely excited and motivated to take this little nook by storm. However, while also being my realistic *humbled* self, I knew that I was going to get more out of this than the audience. I assured myself that my momentous announcement would be only for my benefit, and not anyone else's. If crickets chirped, and not a single head turned, today would be special for me no matter what!
Thankfully, I was wrong.

That turned out to be one of the most up-close and personal gigs I have ever done. Yes, people were chatting with friends, and enjoying their brunch, but they were so engaged and supportive, and toward the end of our time there I shared a bit about who I was as an artist, and announced that as of today I'll be moving forward as the "Modern Muse" of music.
There was an uproar of applause.

I could not have asked for a better reception. It is one of my fondest memories.
(I should note that to this day I still perform at that restaurant once a month for a special jazz brunch, and several of the locals who caught our set still come to see me faithfully.)

During my times brainstorming for a name, I was hoping to capture a persona like the many women in music I aspired to be like. I wanted to be "The First Lady of Song" in my day and age. I felt so much pressure to know myself fully and truly, and have it all figured out so that I could summarize my essence into a single name. I tried to sift through compliments and comparisons to see if I could find myself in them. Gig after gig I would experiment with a slightly different sound or tweak a new look that I thought would accurately portray who I was to the world. Nothing seemed to click, until I realized the spotlight that I had placed on myself was blinding me from what really and truly mattered.

Lights dimmed. Audience gone. Speakers unplugged. What did contentment look like for me?

Will I only be happy singing in front of thousands of people? Will I have arrived when I'm on a major record label? Will I be defined by my music sales?
My mind kept drifting back to that restaurant in Williamsburg.
50 people.
MY favorite songs.
Fun and creative arrangements.
Listening ears.
Intimate setting.
THAT connection is what I wanted.

It has been a long year of performing since that snowy January day, and there has been much more reflection on what it means to be a "Modern Muse".
To be modern I must always be growing. To be a muse I must inspire others' creativity.
I must change and evolve, and encourage change and evolution in those around me.
It is an aspiration, a self-assured identity, and a constant discovery.

In this season I am focusing on getting MY music into the world. I have a home studio up and running, and this muse is singing, writing, creating, and recording it all.

CONVERSATIONS
Coming Soon

~EJT
Liz Terrelltag:lizterrell.com,2005:Post/42919042016-07-23T13:34:55-04:002022-05-16T16:24:56-04:00The Ones Who Change The World
I realized the other day that I am NOT a performer.

I make phone calls. Take phone calls. Book gigs. Pay Musicians. Make setlists. I dress up. Warm-up. Paint my face. Powder my nose. Practice. Sing. Smile. Perform.
But as the last chord dissipates into the air I realize I am empty.

Performances are not the reason I do what I do. They can't be. Smile for adoration. Sing for affirmation.

Thankfully I have grown.

Performing can be a blessing or a curse. You can learn about yourself or hide from yourself. The spotlight can reveal your true identity or your assumed one. The hardest part about this is that the performer gets to pick which one it will be. The ones who change the world.

I don't want to be forgotten. I want to leave a legacy. I want my lyrics and melodies to stand the test of time.
This is the ache I feel within. To create something never created before. To discover the mark I am meant to leave. To fight for and live as the real me.
Music is my weapon. My medicine. My passion. My expression. My voice
I do what I do because I would live an empty and meaningless life without music.

I will not deny that there have been MANY great artists that are worth impersonating. I wouldn't have been brave enough to leap into music had it not been for stories titled Ella, Billie, Judy, Nina, and many, many more.
It's easy to conform and copy, but only learn what you can, and then forge your own journey.
Be brave.
Take risks.
Be the title of your own story.
If you walk only in the dust of someone else's path the treasure you are meant to discover within yourself will be lost to everyone. Someone making omelettes, one at the register, one running about brewing coffee, baking muffins, and perfecting pastry displays. Another is cleaning and stocking shelves, somewhere in the back metal bowls and pans are clattering about, and every now and then the distinct sound of salsa music makes its way through the noise.
They've clearly done all of this before.

It's 6AM, yet they are happily working, and even laughing with each other! Which, if you've been in my life for any length of time, you know this is indeed an anomaly to me.
Thanks to my 3-years of high school Spanish, and my sister Sarah, I'm able to decipher enough of their "secret" language to discover they are all probably related (the managers, I'm guessing, are brother and sister as they banter about who is going to bring "mama" breakfast). Although one could simply look at them to conclude that every single person behind that counter is indeed part of one, big family.

I wonder if this cafe was their dream? It is spotless and clearly well cared for. There is not one apathetic worker among them. The house specialty seems to be omelettes (perhaps like "mama" used to make?) and pastries (old family recipes?) but they have a well thought out menu which advertises a delicious array of edible offerings to the hungry public.
One by one customers come in, about 5 minutes in between each one. An order of coffee here, a bagel there, and a fresh, steaming, cheesy omelette every now and then. The workers like a machine anticipating the imminent kick into full gear...

As I sit in my quiet corner, nursing my french vanilla coffee, staring blankly ahead, still wondering how they are all so darn happy, and trying to overcome my usual morning mind fog, I can't help but reminisce about my history with this particular city...

A bright eyed, beautiful, tall, young lady once believed this was going to be my big start, the chance to get my dream, my music career was supposed to kick off here, and right now I'm supposed to be starring alongside Aaron Lazar in some fantastical new musical on The Great White Way!

Of course, I will always wonder what could have been here. Wondering is the blessing and curse of a perfectionist and a dreamer, but as one who is well versed in how her mind palace operates, I've learned not to live there. The road of wondering quickly becomes regret and before you know it you've taken a sharp left turn over the cliffs of self-loathing and doubt.

This time though, my wondering has brought me to contentment with the life I lead now.

I have started the race, and am experiencing little victories and dreams every day. I DO have a music career, one that is slowly, but surely thriving, and I am starring as the leading lady of my own life every day alongside my amazing, supportive husband.

Not only is my outward musical expression growing and gaining recognition, but my inner music is finally finding and settling into its own voice.

I've noticed that I've begun to sing again.

I know what you're thinking, and, YES, of course I SING! It's my job so to speak, but THIS, this is different.
It's like discovering a secret treasure that you thought was lost to you forever. I am not performing the obligatory warm- ups, or rehearsing a song, or playing a gig, but music is once again overflowing within me. When I would once go about my business quietly thinking and stressing and analyzing every career move and decision, I am instead happily humming and scatting out new and familiar tunes.

My eyes are shining brightly with smile creases in each corner instead of dimming with intensity and furrowing inward giving away an internal frown. I can not pinpoint where this change started, but it has indeed begun.

The cafe is bustling now. They've started blaring the once faint salsa music. Lines of customers at each station. Money and breakfast goods passing quickly between hands. Business men and women with phones in hand, Bright eyed young ladies, ambitious young gentlemen, mothers, fathers, children, an elderly couple decides to sit and enjoy.
The family business thrives on.

All gears are fully functional and this well oiled machine welcomes the fast-pace with a grin. They're ready, because they know those who are hungry will come. They know that their omelettes and pastries will always be in demand. Perhaps there is another breakfast joint across the street, but they have found their specialty, they've practiced and perfected it, and they offer it day after day with confidence.

After all, a body needs food like a soul needs music.

No matter where I chose to set up shop. I'm learning that hungry souls will find me. They'll hear my music, and they'll come.

So I practice, persist, and perfect being ME, and I anticipate the day when I get to feed the masses.

~EJT

Liz Terrelltag:lizterrell.com,2005:Post/37120382015-05-24T16:48:06-04:002022-05-16T16:25:45-04:00How Strange The Change From Major to Minor
I am unsure what prompted me to write this, and I am still quite baffled that I am choosing to share it with the world, but I recall a wise woman once said "music is meant to be expressed, and not merely played." Well I must sincerely apologize to you all who have seen me perform recently. I have merely been playing the melody and the fool, but with a new season fast approaching my craft is calling on my vulnerability, and if I want to move forward I can't ignore it, so for those who have never heard it told before, here is my little love story with music....

I would like to dedicate this post to the friends and family who have come along side me, and stayed for the journey.
Thank you.

“Every time we say goodbye, I die a little,

Every time we say goodbye, I wonder why a little,”

I have always understood music.
Before I knew what a quarter note or a time signature was, I was creating.
I learned by listening.
I couldn’t tell you what a staff was or define the word “chord” yet I heard harmony in every song.
I could isolate each part and sing it.
I could feel music, and I was certain it could understand me.
It became my greatest means of self expression.

I was a bit of an anomaly as a child.
I was shy yet fearless, reserved and rambunctious, curious, teachable, stubborn, and kind.
In different settings I could be different things.

“Why the Gods above me, who must be in the know.

Think so little of me, they allow you to go.”

The only time where all of these traits would come together, where I truly felt the entirety of “Elizabeth Joy” was while I was singing. Every chapter of my childhood is marked by music. My favorite memories of me ALL take place on the stage. The moments in which I have been the most proud of myself are all moments where I have poured my heart and soul into a performance.

“When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it,”

I LOVED music.
I loved learning about it.
I loved singing what I learned.
I loved listening to it.
I loved singing what I listened to.
You get the idea.

"I can hear a lark somewhere, begin to sing about it,"

I’m certain my family has heard me sing more than they’ve heard me speak, and MANY of my friends can probably say the same thing.
I could not imagine a life without music, and as I grew older, and reached the cusp of adulthood I came to realize that there was NOTHING. ELSE. in this world that I could do that would make me truly happy, and so…

"There's no love song finer,"

I leapt boldly from the cliffs of decision and uncertainty, and I DECIDED TO MAKE MUSIC MY CAREER!

"but how strange the change from major to minor..."

Who knew that one decision could shift my entire reality.
Choosing music was the easiest decision I have ever made. It was the biggest “no-brainer” in the history of ME, and everyone agreed and cheered and applauded!

And then I hit the icy waters below, and while gasping for breath I realized suddenly that I no longer understood what the world called music.

It was competition. It was fierce. It was calculating.
It had everything to do with who you knew, and what you looked like.

I was young, wild, and determined, and so I pushed on, and I fought. I fought through many heartbreaks, let-downs, and disappointments. There was even a time when it seemed on the outside that I had given up, but something within me fought for hope, and when I found it I clung to it for dear life, but by then music had almost become a foreign language to me. The new colleagues I found and hoped to call friends instead seemed to hold up a mirror to show me that all I was doing was unoriginal.

The worst thing anyone could ever call me is unoriginal.
Yet I found that every career goal I set, and every decision I made was all ready claimed by someone else. There’s nothing new under the sun.

I haven’t been sure of a single thing since I decided to pursue music as a career, so then WHY did I choose this again?!?!?

Oh yes, I remember…

"Every time we say goodbye, I die a little
Every time we say goodbye, I wonder why a little
Why the gods above me, who must be in the know
Think so little of me they allow you to go

When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it,
I can hear a lark somewhere, begin to sing about it,
There's no love song finer, but how strange the change from major to minor
Every time we say goodbye."

Music has always been sure of me.

Everybody was created unique and special and beautiful and with PURPOSE.
Mine is music. To create it and express it and release it into the world, and hope that it falls on the ears that need to hear it.

If I am not singing I am not living, and so I choose to live on.

It seems that once I figure out one thing about this crazy life, and I try to finally settle down into comfort I find that my heart and soul cry out for more. They long for something new, and I thank God every day that I have found music to satisfy that aching need within me.

I hope that my name will always be synonymous with music, and I intend to share the gift I have been given every single day as long as I have the strength to share it.
I am looking forward to great things this year, and I intend to make 2105 my most memorable year yet. I want to give a big THANK YOU to all you crazy cats who have stuck with me, and all the new friends who will be coming along for the ride.

Hope you enjoy the new site!

~EJT
Liz Terrell
